A bigger tragedy may have been averted.

Authorities found devices they described as “pipe bombs” in the U-Haul rental van that was used by the two shooters who shot two police officers and terrorized a Jersey City neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, police said in radio transmissions.

The article goes on to state the following:

Using closed-circuit surveillance camera footage, police determined that the shooters, a man and a woman, parked the van on Martin Luther King Drive and entered the JC Kosher Supermarket at 223 MLK.

One police officer has died after being shot by the gunmen, and two additional officers and one civilian were also struck by gunfire, officials reported.

Two suspects are dead, a male and a female, and officers are still on the hunt for a third suspect. According to police, there are “multiple deceased” inside the building.

“Today is a horrific day. Officers have come under attack and we have several wounded. Our hearts are heavy and the violence is not over. We need prayers,” the New Jersey State Police wrote in a Twitter post.

NBC News correspondent Tom Winter reported on Twitter, “One police officer is dead, two others shot, and one civilian has been shot in the shooting incident in Jersey City, NJ this afternoon, according to a local prosecutor. Those two officers and one civilian are stable and expected to survive.”

“This information is coming to us during a developing incident so it is possible that there are more dead or injured that we’ll hear about,” Winter added.
