BREAKING: Senate passes tax reform bill (video)

After weeks of debate, the U.S. Senate voted Tuesday night on the final version of the new tax reform bill.

The Senate PASSED the bill, with 51 votes for the legislation and 48 against.

Democrats continued to protest the bill up to the very end, insisting only the wealthy will benefit from the deal, while Republicans have insisted it will hugely impact the middle class. Not a single Democrat supported the bill.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) had previously announced his support for the bill, but was not present for the vote, as he had returned to Arizona while he is recovering from cancer treatment.

Vice President Mike Pence had postponed his trip to the Middle East in order to cast a tie breaker vote if necessary, but his vote was not needed.

The House voted earlier Tuesday, and it too passed the bill without a single Democrat lawmaker supporting the measure. However, once it reached the Senate, two provisions in the package had to be removed over objections from Democrats, who said they were not in compliance with the Senate’s strict budget reconciliation rules.

Fox News reported: Senate Democrats, including Vermont independent Bernie Sanders and Oregon’s Ron Wyden, specifically objected to two provisions in the House bill: one providing for the use of 529 savings accounts for home schooling expenses; and the other establishing criteria to determine whether endowments of private universities are subject to the legislation’s new excise tax.

The bill now heads back to the House for a final vote before heading to the White House for the president’s signature.

Within minutes after the Senate approved the bill, President Trump shot out a statement on Twitter, saying, “The United States Senate just passed the biggest in history Tax Cut and Reform Bill. Terrible Individual Mandate (ObamaCare)Repealed. Goes to the House tomorrow morning for final vote. If approved, there will be a News Conference at The White House at approximately 1:00 P.M.”
