Reports are coming in of a shooting that took place in the lower level baggage claim area of terminal 2 at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport around 1pm Friday afternoon.

The airport reports an ongoing incident near the baggage claim of terminal 2, and the shooter is “contained.”  People inside the airport heard the shots and reportedly broke through the security to run out onto the tarmac to flee the shooting.

This is a developing story.

UPDATE 5:00 pm EST:  It has been confirmed that the shooter flew to Ft. Lauderdale from Anchorage, Alaska – not Canada.

UPDATE 3:35 pm EST:    A Facebook post from Chip LaMarca, who was reportedly at the airport, said the shooter was a passenger who arrived on a Canadian flight.  He claimed his checked bag, then took out the gun from his bag, went into the bathroom and came out shooting people in the baggage claim area.

Reports of a second shooting have not been confirmed.

UPDATE 2:40 pm.   The shooter has been identified as Esteban Santiago, according to Florida Senator Bill Nelson.   Santiago was reportedly carrying a military ID, and did not stop shooting until he had used up 3 magazines.

UPDATE 2:25 pm EST:   5 DEAD & 8 WOUNDED.   A witness identified as John Schlicher called into Fox News and said he was just getting his first bag from baggage claim when the shooting started.  He described the shooter as a tall, slender man with dark hair, wearing a Stars Wars t-shirt, who just pulled out a gun and started shooting.  The shooter stopped once, re-loaded his gun, and started shooting again.   The witness said the man next to him was shot in the head.

While on the phone, the witness said they were all just told to get down, that there is another shooting going on in the garage.  With emotion in his voice, he said, “People are crying out, people are scared to death.”    He said he heard additional shots.

UPDATE: 2:10PM EST – NUMBERS UPDATE:  13 shot, 4 dead, 9 wounded

UPDATE: 1:50pm EST – The shooter is now reported to be in custody.  Reports are conflicted as to whether the shooting happened inside or outside the baggage area.  Authorities do not believe anyone else is involved.  The sheriff’s office is reporting multiple people have been killed.

Local media are reporting that 5 people are dead.

Passengers are now being re-routed back into the airport, off the tarmac.

Former White House Press Secretary, Ari Fleischer, tweeted that he is at the Ft. Lauderdale airport, saying, “Shots have been fired and everyone is running.”

Minutes later he posted, “The police said there is one shooter and five victims.”

Then again, he reported, “All seems calm now, but the police aren’t letting anyone out of the airport – at least not the area where I am.”

Another update on Twitter reported that 9 people were shot, and 1 is dead.
