MONTGOMERY – Alabama Republicans Tuesday night decided to send former Auburn head football coach Tommy Tuberville to face U.S. Sen Doug Jones in November.

Tuberville, a first-time political candidate who had the backing of President Donald Trump, defeated former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was seeking to return to the seat he held for 20 years.

The article goes on to state the following:

Tuberville’s victory showed Trump’s continued grip on Alabama’s GOP electorate even as his standing has taken a hit nationwide amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Sessions was the first U.S. senator to endorse Trump for president in 2016, and became an important surrogate for him during the campaign. Trump nominated Sessions to be U.S. attorney general, where he served from February 2017 to November 2018.

The report notes that when Sessions recused himself from the “Russia collusion” investigation, the relationship between himself and the President soured. Trump has publicly slammed Sessions multiple times, and endorsed Tuberville for the Senate seat.

After Tupberville was declared the winner of the primary Tuesday night, President Trump responded, tweeting, “Wow, just called! @TTuberville – Tommy Tuberville WON big against Jeff Sessions. Will be a GREAT Senator for the incredible people of Alabama. @DougJones is a terrible Senator who is just a Super Liberal puppet for Schumer & Pelosi. Represents Alabama poorly. On to November 3rd.”

On Saturday, Trump said in a Twitter post, “Big Senate Race in Alabama on Tuesday. Vote for @TTuberville, he is a winner who will never let you down. Jeff Sessions is a disaster who has let us all down. We don’t want him back in Washington!”

Tuesday night, Sessions, who received 39.3% of the vote, compared to Tuberville at 60.7%, said in a statement on Twitter, “I want to congratulate Tommy Tuberville on his victory tonight. He is our Republican nominee. We must all stand behind him in November.”
