It’s New York’s most relevant, long anticipated primary election in decades, and it’s already a disaster.
Voters are outraged by what they’ve experienced at some polling places in Brooklyn and Queens today – they can’t vote! NY Daily News reported when voters arrived at P.S. 52 in Springfield Gardens, Queens at 6 .a.m. they learned all three machines on the site were broken. Volunteers told voters to just place their ballots in a slot, and they would be processed later.
At PS 73 in Brooklyn, voters waited for the polls to open at 6 a.m., only to discover that workers couldn’t even access the keys to the building. More than 2 hours later, the site was still closed.
Again, at the Atlantic Terminal site in Brooklyn, workers said the keys to the building had not arrived yet, and the polling station was not opened until 7:30 a.m. When voters got inside, there were no voting machines.
According to one voter, a Board of Elections representative arrived around 8, and told voters he had been busy tending to problems at other polls. Voting finally started at Atlantic Terminal around 8:30. “I am sure there are many people who tried to vote and had to leave who will not be able to come back,” she said.
According to the NY Post, another woman reported on social media that a faulty scanner at Brooklyn District 30 eliminated her vote.
Yet another voter reported being shocked to see his deceased mother’s name above his on the register. She passed away in 2010, and was on the voter roll at HIS ADDRESS (where she has never lived.) He told the poll worker, who crossed out her name – without even asking for proof that she was deceased.
Polls will close in New York at 9:00 p.m.
