Brother requests Gen Flynn’s pardon from Trump

In a Tuesday tweet that has since been deleted, Gen. Michael Flynn’s brother implored President Donald Trump to pardon the former national security adviser.

Joseph Flynn contended that Trump must exonerate the former Army general from his Dec. 1 guilty plea for lying to the FBI regarding conversations with Russia’s former ambassador to the United States. Flynn’s plea deal is a part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

“About time you pardoned General Flynn who has taken the biggest fall for all of you given the illegitimacy of this confessed crime in the wake of all this corruption,” Joseph Flynn tweeted.

The tweet remained on Flynn’s page for approximately 15 minutes and was then deleted. The sibling has since confirmed to Newsweek that he posted the tweet, which was a response to a Trump tweet in which he criticized Mueller’s investigation. He also said he stands by the content of his tweet.

“This is my personal opinion and I stand by it,” Flynn asserted.

In a subsequent tweet, Flynn wrote, “Mr. President, I personally believe that a pardon is due to General Flynn, given the apparent and obvious illegitimacy of the manner in which the so called ‘crimes’ he plead guilty to were extracted from him. I ask for quick action on this. Thank you and keep up the good work!”

Michael Flynn’s guilty plea followed his February firing from the White House for lying to Vice President Mike Pence about his foreign contacts.

Trump has not indicated whether he will pardon him.

“We’ll see what happens,” Trump told reporters earlier this month when asked about a Flynn pardon.

“I don’t want to talk about pardons for Michael Flynn yet,” he said. “We’ll see what happens. Let’s see.”
