President Donald Trump has been criticized for not fighting hard enough to include the southern border wall in the government budget plan, but it has since come out that there is funding for a wall after all… just not the exact type of structure that was spoken about during Trump’s campaign.

A brick-and-mortal border wall may have to wait, but the Trump administration did procure funding for an adequate – albeit hopefully temporary – replacement for the current structure.

“There’s several hundred million dollars for us to replace cyclone fencing with 20-foot high steel wall,” Mick Mulvaney, director of the president’s budget office said at the White House press briefing on Tuesday. “We are building this now,” he added, while showing large images of the current construction.

Mulvaney also chided the Democrats for calling the blockage of a permanent border wall a “victory,” instead stating that the only victory should be for the American people, which this budget is.

Pointing to the photographs, Mulvaney emphasized that the funding will allow for a much larger and safer border protection than the current one in place, and showed the comparison.

“This (pointing to the cyclone fence) doesn’t stop drugs and doesn’t stop criminals from crossing the border. It doesn’t stop hardly anything from crossing the border. This (the new steel wall) does. That’s what we got in this deal and that’s why we’re so excited to follow through on the president’s promises to secure the southern border.”

During the previous day’s press briefing, Mulvaney explained the strategy behind this. “One of the reasons that we agreed to remove the request — to withdraw the request for the time-being about bricks and mortar was that this is only a five-month plan,” he said. “And once we looked our hands over, we realized it was almost impossible, if not impossible, to actually get bricks and mortar on the ground in five months, so why start fighting about it now. Let’s focus on thing we can do in this fiscal year, in the next five months, to secure the border. So we thought that was a nice pickup for us.”
