Navy SEAL Charles Keating, 31, from Phoenix, Arizona was killed Tuesday morning in northern Iraq, when the car he was riding in was hit by direct fire while fighting against 100 ISIS members.
The Daily Mail obtained and released a video by a Kurdish television reporting on the attack, which shows the car Keating was riding in riddled with bullet holes. Most of the interior appears to be undamaged.
A second video shows US and Kurdish troops firing at the ISIS members after they attacked a checkpoint with suicide trucks and bulldozers, on the day Keating was killed. Keating had gone to aid military advisers who had gotten caught in the fight.
The Daily Mail reports that a small group of American advisers had gone to meet with Kurdish Peshmerga forces on Tuesday, and were ambushed by ISIS fighters in armored Humvees and bulldozers who had broken through the front lines. They called for help, and Keating’s quick reaction force came to provide additional firepower”. Keating was struck during the battle, and did not survive although a Black Hawk helicopter did evacuate him to the hospital within an hour.
Keating was the grandson of disgraced Arizona financier Charles Keating. Keating’s mother, Krista Joseph, said he had always wanted to be a SEAL since he was a boy, and had a SEAL poster on his bedroom wall when he was nine years old.
Keating was due to marry his fiancee Brooke Clark in November of this year.
