A Center Point, Alabama burglar was shot dead by a 79-year-old homeowner early Wednesday morning.
Nicholas Attwan McDonald, 22, broke into the residence at approximately 1:00 a.m. with a second unidentified male, waking up John Croft, who told authorities that he had been the victim of 13 previous burglaries and has since armed himself with a firearm for his protection.
McDonald and his accomplice entered Croft’s bedroom and told him not to move. But he was able to grab his nearby .38 revolver and defend himself, shooting McDonald and chasing the second male out of his home.
The male then shot Croft in the lower right leg and entered a waiting getaway car that sped off into the night, being driven by a third suspect.
Croft, who lives alone, was treated and released at an area hospital. McDonald was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating. No arrests have been made yet.
Croft told ABC 33 40 that he plans on purchasing burglary bars for his home to prevent any future break ins.
