A mini bus drove through a crowded market in downtown Beijing, killing four people and injuring several others on Wednesday.

The bus drove into the farmers market at about 3 pm in a tiny town in Beijing’s rural Changping district. Four people were confirmed dead and several injured were taken to area hospitals.

The police in Beijing have taken the vehicle into custody and are investigating. There was no mention of the driver. They have referred to the incident as a traffic accident and don’t seem to believe it was intentional.

China does have a terrible traffic safety record which could indicate incidents like this may be common.

However, China does face threats from Islamist militants operating in its far western region of Xinjiang.
