CA state prosecutor, son of Watergate criminal, arrested for child porn

Raymond Liddy, a deputy attorney general in the state of California, and the son of the notorious Watergate figure, G. Gordon Liddy, has been arrested on charges of child pornography.

An internet service provider had sent a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in January, saying that child porn had been uploaded by a user, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported, adding that another service provider sent in a tip about a month later, reporting the user had uploaded 10 similar images.

Liddy, 53, was arrested at his home Tuesday by two FBI agents and a task force officer after he admitted to the charges in an interview. He claimed that he quickly deleted most of the images he downloaded, and said he “might have” forwarded some images before deleting them. Investigators served a search warrant at his home and discovered multiple child porn images on his computer and on a thumb drive.

Libby was hauled into a San Diego federal court, where he was charged and subsequently released the same day. He was reportedly placed on home detention with a GPS monitoring system in lieu of a $100,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for next month.

The California Attorney General’s Office also said they were “aware of the matter” and have placed Libby on administrative leave. He is a reserve Marine colonel, according to a San Diego Source 2010 Top Attorney’s online profile.

Libby’s father, G. Gordon Liddy, 86, was a key figure in the Watergate scandal, helping direct the burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters, and served over four years in prison for the crime.
