The caravan of illegal aliens from Central America, which set out on March 25, declaring they would go all the way to the U.S. border to seek asylum, have now reached Mexico City, after stopping in Puebla, Mexico to receive legal advice from human rights representatives.

Now armed with training on their “rights” as immigrants, the group is moving northward.

The group, which started out at an estimated 1,200 to 1,500 people, is estimated to be about half their original number now, after two separate groups of a few hundred men each broke off from the main group to go on their own, hoping to catch a freight train north.

BuzzFeed reported that “organizers with Pueblos Sin Fronteras negotiated with Mexican immigration authorities to get people in the caravan humanitarian visas or documents that let them travel freely throughout Mexico for 20 to 30 days without having to worry about being deported.”

Gina Garibo, an organizer with Pueblos Sin Fronteras, told reporters that “she hoped the reduced numbers would draw less international attention and make it easier for asylum-seekers to have their cases heard.”

Adolfo Flores, a BuzzFeed reporter embedded with the group of migrants, tweeted Monday that the caravan just arrived in Mexico City.

From there, some will reportedly choose to stay in Mexico, while the rest will continue northward, still declaring they will seek asylum at the U.S. border.

Flores tweeted last week, “At caravan general meeting Irineo Mujica said the caravan will continue and will not be stopped. The group plans on going to Puebla and then Mexico City. After that they will go on with asylum seekers.”

On Saturday, he wrote about a group of migrants receiving legal training:

“Today the migrants are being explained their asylum rights in the US and Mexico. As well as how the detention system works in the US. These guys here are waiting for their individual meetings with attorneys on their potential cases. The group of 17 teens asked questions like how long they’d be in detention, what documents they need, and whether a friend could sponsor them if they have no family in the US.”

BuzzFeed reported on Saturday:

After days of walking and sleeping in the open air, a caravan of Central American migrants reached the Mexican city of Puebla aboard buses Friday, where the migrants will participate in legal seminars to determine who among them will travel on to the United States and who will make asylum claims in Mexico.

About 630 people made the trip to Puebla, where they were greeted with much fanfare. Three trucks offering medical care were waiting for the tired migrants, who’d been aboard the buses for about 12 hours, and human rights workers monitored their arrival. Pots of fried pork belly were on offer, and groups huddled underneath blue and yellow tarps, while others lay on blankets around the play equipment in Parque Serdan, a public park in the city’s north.

“Long live Mexico! Long live Puebla! Long live Central America,” shouted Dennis Contreras, a 32-year-old Honduran, into a megaphone.

Organizers contradicted statements from the Mexican government and President Donald Trump that the caravan was over, though its numbers were considerably reduced from the 1,200 to 1,500 people it had included during its journey through southern Mexico.

“The caravan continues,” Gina Garibo, an organizer with Pueblos Sin Fronteras, told reporters hours before the buses left Matías Romero Avendaño, the town in the state of Oaxaca where the migrants had camped out in a sports complex for days, and which chartered the buses to take the migrants to Puebla. “Many people continued on their own path and plan to meet us in Puebla and continue with us.”

A CNN reporter attempted to show how harmless the group of illegal aliens are, as they arrived in Puebla, Mexico for their legal training and were welcomed and fed by members of the community.
