Cartoonist apologizes on Megyn Kelly show for insulting Huckabee Sanders (video)

Last week, a Los Angeles Times columnist wrote a hit piece on President Donald J. Trump and White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. In the article, columnist David Horsey criticized Sanders’ physical appearance and accused Sanders and Trump of dealing in falsehoods as a matter of course.

After a public backlash erupted over the comments, Horsey removed the offensive content related to Sanders’ looks.

On Wednesday, Horsey excused his comments to NBC’s Megyn Kelly, saying that they were the result of the “sexist world” we live in, which has contributed to his lesser impulses in critiquing women.

“I grew up in the same sexist world everyone else does and stuff just comes out,” the columnist said. “This is a lifelong process where you just try to get better every day and sometimes your brain goes crazy or you get into a difficult spot that you didn’t expect to get into because you slipped into kind of a cliché way of thinking.”

In his original piece, Horsey claimed Sanders “does not look like the kind of woman” whom President Donald Trump would choose to represent him to the media. He felt the president would prefer “sleek beauties with long legs and stiletto heels” who could pass for “arm candy.” Horsey envisioned first daughter Ivanka Trump and First Lady Melania Trump as the more likely desired representatives.

After later erasing the references to Sanders’ physique and appearance in the column, Horsey wrote an apology to Times readers and to  Sanders for “a description that was insensitive and failed to meet the standards of our newspaper.”

The remainder of Horsey’s piece is still a slam on Sanders and Trump, especially as it pertains to his assertion that Sanders has propensity for telling falsehoods with ease.

On Wednesday’s show, Kelly further called Horsey out for other comments he made in the piece, specifically about Fox News anchors. Horsey admitted that he felt bad about all of the sexist comments he’d made.

“When you goof up like this, you’ve gotta face up to it,” Horsey said. “Real men apologize.”

He said he’d done something “ridiculously wrong” and was owning up to it, because ultimately he needed to recognize exactly what he did wrong. He also called his comments “the little stuff” and possibly “the medium stuff,” which could open the way for “the really bad stuff.”

He said he was calling himself on it and would call other men on such offenses.
