After the midnight deadline to pass a continuing resolution passed without a bipartisan agreement in the Senate, the United States federal government shut down, prompting celebrities to flock to Twitter and blame President Donald Trump for the congressional impasse.
In a late Friday statement, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands. When Democrats start paying our armed forces and first responders we will reopen negotiations on immigration reform.”
Sanders declared that “Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown,” adding, “This is the behavior of obstructionist losers, not legislators.”
Many Hollywood celebrities, however, blamed the shutdown on Trump and Republican lawmakers.
“The reason the government shutdown is that Trump and his team have an ideological commitment to allowing fewer black and brown people into the country,” tweeted Grammy-winning singer John Legend.
