Drama and yelling exploded from the House floor Thursday. See video.
Openly gay Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney had put forth an amendment which would have voided a provision in the defense authorization bill pass Wednesday, which provides broad religious freedom exemptions for religious organizations that receive federal contracts. The amendment would have blocked funding from anti-LGBT government contractors.
Democrats thought they had won 207-106, but before the gavel came down, seven House Republicans switched their votes, defeating the executive order Obama had issued that bars discrimination against LGBT employees by federal contractors. The final vote was 212-213, in favor of the Republicans.
Democrats were outraged, loudly chanting, “shame, shame” and booing. WATCH VIDEO:
