In New York City on Friday, Variety held its “Power of Women” luncheon for notable female figures as representative honorees, including former first daughter Chelsea Clinton.
“Saturday Night Live” star Vanessa Bayer introduced the honorees and decided to use her platform to poke fun at Chelsea’s mother, Hillary Clinton, regarding her presidential election loss.
Bayer made the following joke:
“OK, we have some pretty amazing honorees this afternoon: Jessica Chastain, Gayle King, Blake Lively, Audra McDonald, Tina Knowles, Shari Redstone, and Chelsea Clinton. And, they all have one thing in common: None of their moms are president.”
The crowd, comprised of New York liberals and feminists, including Chelsea, did not take well to the joke. When the former first daughter took to the stage to discuss childhood obesity, she directed her platform to the comedienne’s quip.
“Vanessa, we may be able to say in this room today that no one’s mother is currently president, but someday, someone’s will be,” Clinton retorted. The left-leaning audience responded more positively to Chelsea’s concluding speech.
