According to NBC Chicago, a total of 41 people were shot, 11 of which died, in just a 48-hour period in Chicago over Christmas weekend.

Officer Jose Estrada, a spokesman with the Chicago Police Department, said in a telephone interview on Sunday that the total number of homicides so far this year was 745, a 56 percent increase from 476 at the same time last year.

Officer Estrada also said that at the time of the interview, the total number of shooting victims this year stood at 4,252, a 47 percent from 2,884 at the same time in 2015.

Since this phone interview occurred, the The Chicago Tribune reported that the number of homicides this year has already increased to 763, and the number of shootings this year has spiked to 4,306.

This is the first time in nearly two decades that there has been more than 700 reported homicides in Chicago.
