The crime report coming out of Chicago for the Forth of July weekend shows that 51 people were shot and six died over a 3-day period, according to the Chicago Tribune.
As high as the numbers are, believe it or not they represent a slight decrease from the number reported last year. This year’s shootings began late Friday night when three men were killed while sitting on a porch, reportedly shot by two unnamed suspects.
In a report issued Saturday afternoon by the Tribune, 23 people had been shot with 5 fatalities. By Monday morning, that number had increased, according to a Twitter post that read: “One killed, 10 wounded in shootings since Sunday afternoon, bringing the total shooting victims this weekend to 51.”

Last year, sixty-six people were shot in Chicago during the Independence Day weekend, and the Chicago Police Department says June’s overall numbers are a sign that shootings are declining in the city. According to the CPD, there has been a drop in shootings in the first half of this year.
