Childhood home of Jackie Kennedy Onassis goes on the market (Video tour)

Merrywood Estate, the childhood home of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, described as one of the finest private estates in the Washington, D.C. region, is now on the market, listed for $49.5 million.

Built in 1919, Merrywood sits on the banks of the Potomac River in McLean, Virginia, on a beautiful seven-acre property just eight miles from downtown Washington, D.C.

According to the listing on Sotheby’s International Realty, the magnificent 23,000 square foot home has 9 bedrooms, 11 full baths and 2 partial baths, along with an elevator that services all four floors. The fenced estate also includes a tennis court, both an indoor and an outdoor pool, a separate carriage house large enough for four vehicles, staff accommodations, a state-of-the-art security system, and its own climate-controlled wine cellar.

Merrywood became the primary home of Jacqueline Bouvier in 1942, just one month prior to her 13th birthday, when her mother, Janet Lee Bouvier, married Hugh D. Auchincloss, heir of Standard Oil. The Wall Street Journal noted that Jackie wrote in 1944, “I always love it so at Merrywood… so peaceful…with the river and those great steep hills.”

The home is currently owned by AOL co-founder Steve Case, who bought the property in 2005 for $24.5 million. Case is reportedly selling the property because he and his wife are “empty-nesters” and wish to travel more, including spending more time at other properties they own.
