A Christian man in Israel has been charged with murdering his own daughter for her relationship with a Muslim, committing what prosecutors are describing as an “honor killing.”
Local media report that according to the indictment, the Israeli Arab family of Henriette Karra was upset about her relationship with the man, who was serving time in prison and had convinced her to convert to Islam. Reports say the relationship drew “vehement opposition” from her family members to the point where Henriette sent messages to her friend saying, “They are sending people to kill me.”
The 17-year-old rebuffed offers from police and social service authorities to hold a meeting with her parents to calm tensions on June 11, two days before she was murdered. Instead, she asked for their help to rent a flat, then returned home to her parents and attended a graduation party at her Jewish school the following day. However, her primary goal was a complete severing of ties.
On June 13, the day Henriette was murdered, she deposited some money into her boyfriend’s prison canteen account and returned home to tell a relative that he would be released at the end of the week and that she planned on converting to Islam.
According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the relative told Henriette’s father, Sami Karra, of his daughter’s plans.
The indictment lays out Sami’s subsequent actions: “The defendant decided to cause the death of the deceased and in order to realize his goal, he was equipped with a knife. The defendant stabbed the deceased three times, causing her death on the spot.”
The Jerusalem Post reports Karra said Henriette “damaged the honour of the family and made him feel ashamed.”
