A church bus carrying senior adults was involved in a deadly head-on collision in Texas on Wednesday afternoon.

The small bus and a pick-up truck collided on Highway 83 near Garner State Park, approximately 88 miles west of San Antonio.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m., and authorities have reported that there are multiple deaths.

According to a Facebook post by First Baptist Church in New Braunfels, senior adults from their congregation were aboard the bus, returning from a retreat.

“We understand there have been some fatalities,” the post says. “All activities for tonight are cancelled, including dinner. The Sanctuary will be open this evening for prayer and support. Please be in prayer for all involved.”

Rick Ballesteros of Ulvade, who happened upon the accident, said, “It was a really gruesome scene,” noting that there were possibly seven fatalities.

Uvalde County Fire Marshals said DPS and EMS units, as well as Airlife, responded to the scene.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott released this statement regarding the incident, “We are saddened by the loss of life, and our hearts go out to all those affected. We thank the first responders working on the scene in the wake of this unimaginable tragedy.”
