Claim: Trump is outspending Obama

Since he took up residence in the White House 80 days ago, President Trump has made many trips back and forth to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. It’s been reported that these trips have so far cost taxpayers approximately $20 million.

Critics of the president are comparing his multi-million dollar trips to those of former President Barack Obama, who spent nearly $97 million on travel during his eight years in office, saying that Trump will likely outspend Obama in travel expenses in just his first year in office.

For example, a 2016 Government Accountability Office report showed that a four-day trip Obama took to Florida in 2013 “cost the Secret Service and Coast Guard $3.6 million.” Trump’s trips to Florida would cost roughly the same amount, and as of Monday, he has spent a total of 21 days at Mar-a-Lago, which could carry an estimated $21.6 million price tag.

While Obama was in office, Trump was known to criticize him for his vacations and frequent golf games, tweeting in 2011, “The habitual vacationer, @BarackObama, is now in Hawaii. This vacation is costing taxpayers $4 million +++ while there is 20% unemployment.”

He has also tweeted, “President @BarackObama’s vacation is costing taxpayers millions of dollars——Unbelievable!”

Supporters of President Trump, including our very own DML, argue that the president is not travelling to Mar-a-Lago on vacation, but to conduct business as was the case when he met last week with the president of China and last month with the prime minister of Japan. “We’re not comparing apples to apples,” said DML. “Trump travels in order to make America great again, Obama traveled to improve his golf swing.”
