According to the Washington Blade, the executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, Mara Keisling recently told the Washington Blade that multiple sources have told her President Donald Trump plans to rescind transgender student protections put forth by former President Obama.
“This is the first day of the president’s second month in office and he is now fully coming after LGBT people,” Keisling told the Washington Blade. “I’m angry; I’m outraged. This is about kids who just want to go to school, who just want to be themselves, and to hear the president a week or two ago talk about how supportive he is of LGBT people…, it’s just outrageous that he [goes] after trans kids this way.”
Parents of transgender students have fought to force schools to allow their children to use the bathroom consistent with their gender identity. Reuters reports soon after the Justice Department and Education Department passed the guidance from Obama, Trump made a campaign promise to rescind it while still “protecting everybody.” The guidance states that a transgender student’s “right” is protected under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, but many conservatives disagree.
“We have nothing to add to this report right now, but will keep you posted if anything changes,” said White House spokesperson Kelly Love.
Trump has said that he is supportive of LGBTQ rights and will uphold former President Obama’s orders barring anti-LGBT workplace discrimination.
Still, transgender activists want bathroom preference rights to be included under Title IX.
“Transgender young people face tragically high rates of discrimination and bullying, and they need a government that will stand up for them — not attack them,” said Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign. “It’s shocking that this kind of harm would even be a subject of debate for the president. We call on Trump to immediately and permanently affirm the Obama administration’s guidance and protect transgender students.”
