Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Media Giant

A Wednesday morning court filing claims that Turner Broadcasting Systems’ employees faced workplace prejudice that held them back in their professions and resulted in at least one former employee being let go.

Employees of CNN and TBS assert that there is an issue with “discriminatory practices being implemented throughout all of Turner’s Networks.” Turner Broadcasting Systems is an American media conglomerate and a division of Time Warner.

Ernie Colbert Jr., who has worked for TBS for 19 years, claims he has continually and historically received less pay and fewer advancements in comparison to his white coworkers. Celeslie Henley alleges she lost her job with Turner five days after issuing a complaint about unfair treatment with the company.

In a separate case filed almost a year ago, CNN producer DeWayne Walker is suing the company for $50 million over lost promotions and retaliation following a formalized complaint he submitted to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

A growing number of Turner employees are now asking to be part of Wednesday’s class action lawsuit, Law Newz reports. Currently, nearly 30 individuals are part of the case, with multiple calls coming in daily.

Attorney Daniel Meachum, who represents both cases, said insights he’s gained demonstrate that black employees at Turner are advanced at a much lower rate than whites.

“This can only be attributed to the fact that Turner, specifically CNN has implemented formal written and unwritten policies and practices regarding promotions. There is no objective factor other than race that can explain this disparity since performance is not linked to job title or education,” Meachum stated.
