Even though Matt Lauer is reportedly a Hillary Clinton supporter, the Clinton campaign has wasted no time throwing him under the bus for his handling of the NBC Commander-In-Chief forum Wednesday evening, saying he went too soft on Trump.
Now, to add insult to injury, the Clinton campaign is taking full advantage of the beating Lauer has been given by using his “failure” as a fundraising message.
Thursday evening, the campaign sent out an email, headlined, “Matt Lauer,” saying:
Last night, during the Commander-in-Chief Forum on live national television, Donald Trump kicked off his evening by lying to the American people about his position on the Iraq War — and no one stopped to call him on it. Not only did the moderator, Matt Lauer, fail to fact-check Trump — he then kept the conversation moving.”
And they went on with a call for Democrat voters to step up and send a donation to stop Trump.
Now, for the second night in a row, the Clinton campaign used Matt Lauer again to raise more funds. (Along with emphasizing that Trump is “more dangerous” than Clinton’s “minor email scandal.”)
Here’s the email the Clinton campaign sent out Friday night:
This morning, the Washington Post editorial board took a moment to examine how Matt Lauer treated the two candidates at the forumon Wednesday night — where a third of Hillary’s time was spent answering questions on emails and Trump got asked softball questions he could answer with lies.
After acknowledging that fact, the Post asked their readers to consider the following:
This is the fundamental problem with the way the media at large covers the presidential race in 2016 — and it’s why we need the resources to get the facts in front of voters every day from now through November 8th.
I work with reporters every day. I’ll be the first to tell you how hard they work — the extent to which they try to be objective, evenhanded, and fair.
But there’s just one problem: They’ve never had to cover two candidates as vastly different as Hillary and Trump.
When cable news and major papers spend the same amount of time (or more!) covering Hillary’s emails as they do covering Trump’s ties to white supremacists, unapologetic admiration for Vladimir Putin, or blatant history of discrimination, voters begin to treat the two candidates as if they were equivalent.
And too many people come to see this election as a choice between “the lesser of two evils” instead of a stark decision between a gifted, dedicated public servant and a dangerous, divisive authoritarian.
So our biggest test as a team in the 60 days we have left is to try to accomplish what the media has so far failed to do, and make sure every voter understands how dangerous a Trump presidency would be. The world is counting on us.
