Northern Arizona University (NAU) and its Political Science department recently held an event dubbed the “Specter of Fascism,” an outlet providing professors the opportunity to proclaim Donald Trump a fascist.
The six-person panel made up of NAU professors used their platform to correlate the Trump administration’s early actions to those of Nazi Germany, with a criminology professor giving the president the moniker of “rapist-in-chief.”
The department head of Politics and International Affairs, Lori Poloni-Staudinger quoted passages from the book “The Origins of Totalitarianism” to make her point of Trump’s “cocktail of fear, racist hate as an influence of normalization, [and] delegitimizing the press” being signs of his delusion.
“The material and psychological conditions that made it possible for the Nazis to mobilize masses around an ideologically constructed enemy are the very same conditions in which our politics is unfolding today,” Poloni-Staudinger went on to say.
Proclaiming Trump as “rapist-in-chief” was professor Ray Michalowski, who added further thoughts, saying, “We’re far too early in the Trump presidency to have any way of knowing if the republic will survive his term in office or be replaced by a classically fascist state, or some other form of totalitarianism.”
Michalowski rhetorically questioned the audience when asking, “Do we have a charismatic dictator? We have a charismatic leader, for sure. Someone who’s seen as charismatic by a significant portion of the power.”
