In the opening statement former FBI Director James Comey released Wednesday, he wrote about being invited by President Trump to dinner the night of Friday, January 27.
In his testimony Thursday, Comey elaborated on how the invitation was extended… and said he had planned to take his wife out to dinner that night, but had to cancel his plans in order to have dinner with the president.
“He called me at my desk at lunchtime and asked me if I was free for dinner that night,” Comey told the committee.
“I said, ‘Yessir,’ he said, ‘Will 6 work?’ He said, ‘I was going to invite your whole family, but we’ll do that next time, I wanted you to come over, is 6 a good time to come over?’ I said ‘Sir, whatever works for you.’ And he said 6:30, and I said, ‘Whatever works for you sir.'”
“And then he hung up and I had to call my wife to break a date with her. I was supposed to take her out to dinner that night.”
Comey admitted that, in retrospect, he wishes he’d gone out to dinner with his wife that night instead of meeting with President Trump.
