James Comey stated on Wednesday that he had no other choice than to do what he did in the days leading up to the presidential election. His testimony came the day after Hillary Clinton asserted in a television interview on Tuesday that Comey and Russian election interference were the sole reasons she lost the presidency to Donald Trump.

“If the election had been on October 27 I’d be your president,” said Clinton.

FBI Director James Comey told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday how agonizing a decision it was for him to reveal new developments in the bureau’s investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails days before the presidential election.

“Why was it necessary to announce, 11 days before a presidential election, that you were opening an investigation on a new computer without any knowledge of what was in that computer? Why didn’t you just do that investigation as you would normally, with no public announcement?” asked California senator, Dianne Feinstein.

“I could not see a door labeled ‘No action here,'” was Comey’s response, who later said that “concealing, in my view, would be catastrophic.”

Comey explained that his agents had uncovered thousands of new emails that it had not yet been reviewed in their investigation of Clinton because they had somehow ended up on the laptop of scandal-ridden ex-New York representative, Anthony Weiner, husband of trusted Clinton aide, Huma Abedin.

“Look, this is terrible, it makes me mildly nauseous to think that we might have had some impact on the election,” said Comey, “But honestly, it wouldn’t change the decision.”

Feinstein contrasted Comey’s decision to reveal the Clinton email situation with the alleged Russian election interference. “I can’t imagine how an unprecedented, big and bold hacking interference in our election by the Russian government did not also present ‘exceptional circumstances,'” she said.

Other senators then grilled Comey on the “dirty dossier” of claims about President Trump’s ties to Russia, which Senate Judiciary chairman Charles Grassley of Iowa pointed out include “debunked salacious claims.”

According to Grassley, “Much of the dossier has been proven wrong and many of his outlandish claims have failed to gain traction.”

President Trump weighed in on Comey’s testimony via Twitter, stating: “Comey was the best thing that ever happened to Hillary Clinton in that he gave her a free pass for many bad deeds! The phony Trump/Russia story was an excuse used by the Democrats as justification for losing the election.” He added, “Perhaps Trump just ran a great campaign?”
