The left erupted in a firestorm on Twitter against President Trump Sunday afternoon.

The attacks came after President Trump blasted the father of one of the UCLA basketball players busted for shoplifting in China, suggesting he should have just left the three shoplifters in a Chinese jail if the father, LaVar Ball, doesn’t appreciate his efforts to intervene for the players.

Regarding the president’s intervention on his son’s behalf, Ball told ESPN on Friday, “What was he over there for? Don’t tell me nothing. Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out.”

President Trump responded, “Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail!”

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, went after President Trump Sunday afternoon in a scathing Twitter post.

“The President would have left American students in a foreign jail because their families didn’t lavish sufficient praise on him. How can someone in such a big office be so small?” Schiff tweeted.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) also ripped into President Trump for the statement, tweeting back, “Dear @realDonaldTrump: As public servants, we help people because it is the right thing to do, not because we want to be praised for it. Also, the US President should never wish for Americans to be locked up in a foreign jail.”

Former FBI Director James Comey also weighed in on the issue, tweeting a quote: “A good leader takes a little more than his share of the blame, a little less than his share of the credit.” Arnold H. Glasow(1905-1998).

Huffington Post writer Tony Posnanski noted sarcastically that on the same date in 1863, Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, to which MSNBC host Joy Reid responded, “The rise and fall of the Republican Party summed up in a single tweet.”

James Poniewozik of the New York Times tweeted, “Oh God, he’s going to rage out and un-pardon the White House Thanksgiving turkeys, isn’t he?”

Others were accusing President Trump of sending a “racist tweet.”
