Conflicts of Interest Exposed For Ethics Director Criticizing Trump

The Director of the Office of Government Ethics, Walter M. Shaub, who has shown opposition to Trump, has donated to Obama and openly defended the Clinton Foundation when they were under scrutiny.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, Shaub’s office is in charge of reviewing financial disclosures and executive nominees during the transition process. Right now, he is fighting to hold off the swearing in of Trump’s nominees, because their financial disclosure reviews are not finished.

He is also questioning Trump’s motives for turning his business over to his sons, saying, “We can’t risk creating the perception that government leaders would use their official positions for profit.”

The billionaire President-elect explained in a press conference last week the he would not see any of the Trump Organization dealings nor would the organization do any foreign business while he was in office. He even added that the profit of all foreign ties with his organization would go directly to the United States Treasury.

It’s important to note Shaub defended the Clinton’s in front of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, when they questioned Secretary Clinton’s failure to disclose six-figure dollar speeches her husband gave to foreign governments and donors.  Although he told the committee then that it was okay they did not disclose the information, he has been quick to question Trump on his “ethics” with the Trump Organization.

“I need to talk about ethics today because the plan the president-elect has announced doesn’t meet the standards that the best of his nominees are meeting and that every president in the past four decades has met,” he said. “My hope is that, if the Office of Government Ethics can provide some constructive feedback on his plan, he may choose to make adjustments that will resolve his conflicts of interest.”

Washington Free Beacon also reported that Shaub donated $500 to Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.
