An exclusive, stunning report by Politico on Sunday revealed that the Obama administration had derailed a law enforcement campaign targeting drug trafficking by the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah, in order to “improve relations” with the Iranian regime and preserve the nuclear deal with Iran.

A project led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, known as Project Cassandra, reportedly targeted the Lebanese militant group’s criminal activities, which included gun and drug-tracking equal to $1 billion. But by tossing a string of roadblocks holding back the project, Obama administration officials helped Hezbollah to grow into a major global security threat bankrolling terrorist and military operations, the report stated.

Thursday, leaders of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform shot off a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, demanding that all documents be turned over no later than 5 p.m. on January 8, 2018, relating to all matters regarding the DEA’s case against the Hezbollah network.

The letter was signed by Rep. Jim Jordan and Rep. Ron DeSantis, and also requests that Sessions provide a briefing for Committee staff on the case no later than January 12, 2018.

Even as Hezbollah was funneling loads of cocaine into the United States, and reportedly laundering at least $200 million per month just in the U.S. alone, and the DEA was investigating the scheme, the letter says the Obama administration “ripped apart this entire effort and was very well supported and resourced, and it was done from the top down.”

As the DEA sought approval for major investigations, prosecutions, arrests and financial sanctions, officials in Obama’s Justice and Treasury departments delayed, hindered or rejected their requests, Politico reported.

The Washington Free Beacon reported:

The request for information marks the first investigatory effort by lawmakers since Politico first disclosed that the Obama administration may have thwarted DEA investigations into Hezbollah as part of an effort to avoid upsetting Iran.

Multiple sources who spoke to the Free Beacon about the matter described the Hezbollah meddling as one part of a larger Obama administration effort to overlook Iran’s global terror operations.

Congress is particularly interested to learn whether key senior Obama administration officials, including former National Security Council staffer Ben Rhodes, were involved in meddling with the Hezbollah operation as part of an effort to preserve diplomatic relations with Iran and pave the way towards the nuclear deal.

“I’ve long believed that the Obama administration could not have done any more to bend over backwards to appease the Iranian regime, yet news that the Obama administration killed the investigation into a billion dollar drug ring that lined the terrorist group Hezbollah’s pockets in order to save its coveted Iran deal may very well take the cake,” Rep. Ron DeSantis (R., Fla.) said.
