While Republican congressmen were practicing early Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia, for an upcoming charity baseball game, a “multiple shooting” occurred in the 400 block of E. Monroe Street.

Alexandria police report that the suspect is “believed in custody.” The identity of the suspect has not been released yet.

Multiple reports claim that Republican Whip Steve Scalise and two Capitol Police officers were shot and others wounded.

A Fox News reporter posted a tweet noting that congressional staffers were also shot.

“Right now, we’re secure,” Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) told CNN Wednesday morning.

“At least five” people were shot, according to Brooks, whose voice wavered.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer reported that President Trump and Vice President Pence are being continually briefed on the “developing situation in Virginia.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected,” Spicer tweeted.
