The Hill reports, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), recently took a secret trip to the capital of Syria.
Her spokeswoman, Emily Latimer, told Foreign Policy that Gabbard wanted to find an end to the six-year war in the country.
Latimer did not comment on whether or not Gabbard had met with Syrian President Bashar Assad during her trip. However, she did say Gabbard “felt it was important to meet with a number of individuals and groups including religious leaders, humanitarian workers, refugees and government and community leaders.”
According to The Hill, Gabbard is an Iraq War veteran who previously called for the U.S. to stop providing aide to Syrian opposition rebels.
“I don’t think Assad should be removed,” Gabbard told CNN in 2015. “If Assad is removed and overthrown, ISIS, al Qaeda, Al Nusra, these Islamic extremist groups will walk straight in and take over all of Syria … they will be even stronger.”
