Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), who is no stranger to controversy, has paid her daughter Karen Waters over $650,000 since 2006 through her election committee, Citizens for Waters.
The younger Waters runs an operation in which she effectively sells her mother’s endorsement to other politicians and political groups in exchange for campaign contributions, an arrangement that is quite lucrative. In 2016 alone, Waters’ campaign made nearly $300,000 from groups who bought her endorsements.
The Waters-endorsed “slate mailers” are sent to almost 200,000 residents in South Central Los Angeles, where Waters is held in high esteem. They contain brief quotes from Waters about candidates and initiatives she supports.
In 2016, California Democratic senator Kamala Harris paid Waters $30,000 for an endorsement of her candidacy, while two L.A.-based groups paid the congresswoman $35,000 each for her endorsement of their transportation initiative.
According to filings with the Federal Election Committee (FEC), Karen Waters was paid over $65,000 during 2016’s campaign cycle for heading the slate mail operation and is still owed $108,952. That payment will bring Karen’s total compensation to over $750,000 since 2006.
In her 13 terms as a congresswoman, Waters has been listed four times by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington — a left-leaning government watchdog — on its list of “most corrupt” politicians: 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2011.
In 2010, Waters was charged with three counts of ethics violations after helping to secure federal bailout funds for a bank in which her husband held stocks.
