Conservative NYT writer rips Hannity for Buckley award; Sean rips back

The so-called conservative columnist at the New York Times, Bret Stephens sparked a Twitter reaction from Fox News host Sean Hannity after Stephens claimed in a long-winded, erudite op-ed on Thursday that Hannity was far beneath the honor of receiving the William F. Buckley Jr. Award for Media Excellence from the Media Research Center.

Stephens’ criticisms of Hannity and even the Media Research Center in his piece, titled, “Sean Hannity is no William F. Buckley” were scathing, making one wonder just what kind of a conservative writer he is for the New York Times after he basically calls anyone involved in today’s conservative movement an “idiot”.

According to Stephens, the Media Research Center’s decision to give such an award to Hannity is a sign of the decline of the conservative movement.

Hannity made his reaction to the hit piece known on Twitter:

Buckley was a pioneer of the modern conservative movement, and Stephens explained that he thinks conservatism has really changed since the days of Reagan.

“And so we reach the Idiot stage of the conservative cycle, in which a Buckley Award for Sean Hannity suggests nothing ironic, much less Orwellian, to those bestowing it, applauding it, or even shrugging it off,” he writes. “The award itself is trivial, but it’s a fresh reminder of who now holds the commanding heights of conservative life, and what it is that they think.”

Stephens is one of several voices in the mainstream media who are talking about the “decline of conservatism” in America. There’s a similar article in the Washington Post.

Hannity made it clear that he knows what he is fighting for; and he also knows his enemies.
