Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is pushing hard in his feelings about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Jones has threatened to sue the National Football League and several team owners if the league agrees to a new contract with Goodell.
In May 2017, the league’s owners voted unanimously to keep Goodell on as commissioner by agreeing to extend his contract through 2018. But Jones has changed his mind, saying the situation in the NFL is growing worse.
During the 2013-2014 season, Goodell reportedly earned $44 million. Goodell is now seeking a $50 annual salary with access to a private jet for life.
Jones blames Goodell for the growing issues that come with the national anthem protests that have hurt the league’s brand and pushed TV ratings down.
But Jones is now facing a backlash from the NFL after he threatened to sue the league over the contract debate. The NFL is accusing Jones of attempting to sabotage contract negotiations with Goodell, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing a letter sent by the NFL to Jones.
In the document, the NFL said Jones’ “antics, whatever their motivations, are damaging the league.”
According to FOX News, the letter was reportedly sent to all 32 NFL owners, and it confirmed Jones had been booted as a non-voting member of the compensation committee due to his threats to sue. One sports reporter claims the owners are debating the nuclear option of ousting Jones as a team owner. Jones says the possibility of that sort of thing happening is nil and calls the report “laughable.”
Goodell has helped enrich team owners in a big way. In 2013, the NFL was worth $9 billion. In 2017, the league was expected to generate about $14 billion, NBC Sports reported. Goodell said previously he hoped the NFL would be able to reach a staggering $25 billion in annual revenue by 2027.
