Cruz Has CPAC Crowd Roaring Over Harry Reid Comments

During a “Conversation about the Constitution” with talk-radio host Mark Levin at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday, Republican Senator Ted Cruz told former foe and Democratic Senator Harry Reid that conservatives owe him “an ironic debt of gratitude” for abolishing the ability of the Senate to filibuster confirmation of presidential appointees back when he served as majority leader.

Cruz said that Reid’s decision created an opportunity to change the direction of the Democratic-dominated federal courts. He added, “It is the direct result of Harry Reid that we now have the most conservative cabinet in decades.”

“And so, if I can be a little presumptuous, Mark,” the senator continued, “let me on behalf of CPAC thank Harry Reid. Harry Reid, thank you for Attorney General Jeff Sessions.”

Then, he proceeded to thank Reid for “EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and very, very soon I look forward to thanking Harry Reid for Supreme Court Justice Gorsuch.”

Cruz also commented on the possibility of  Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., winning the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee. He jokingly said, “I’ll commend the Democrats for one thing. If they name Keith Ellison, we can commend them for truth in advertising.”

As a result of Reid’s altering the rules of the “nuclear option,” Cruz reportedly anticipates Trump and congressional Republicans will likely cultivate young conservative jurists for lengthy service on the federal bench.

He told reporters at The Daily Caller, “The consequences of it are we have a much more conservative cabinet and I believe we’re going to be able to move expeditiously to confirm strong conservatives. There are over 100 vacancies [on the federal bench.] I would like to see an army of young principled constitutionalists on the bench, a generation of new leadership, a generation of 30-something and 40-something Scalias and Thomases, which will impact not just protecting our constitutional rights today but for generations to come.”
