A teenage father abandoned his 16-day-old son on Monday in a Northern California strip mall parking lot. Authorities say the newborn was in critical but stable condition Tuesday.
The father, 18-year-old Daniel Mitchell, was caught on surveillance video removing a car seat holding his newborn boy from a vehicle, placing it on the pavement and then driving away.
Employees from a nearby barber shop informed police after noticing the unattended car seat had a baby in it. Police were able to get the vehicle’s license plate from surveillance video and identify Mitchell.
Mitchell was taken into custody on suspicion of child endangerment, child abandonment, committing a felony while free on bail and misdemeanor possession of suspected cocaine.
The newborn was airlifted to a children’s hospital and was in critical but stable condition. Reportedly the baby suffered from a condition that required specialized care.
