During a Saturday night hockey game, the Dallas Stars jumbotron operator poked fun at President Trump by displaying the following message, “Tonight’s Attendance 1.5 Million.” Truth is the American Airlines Center arena holds less than 20,000 people for hockey games.
The false message was inspired by claims made by White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, who ripped the media for false reporting on the number of people who viewed the inauguration. During a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Spicer said Trump’s inauguration drew “the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period. Both in person and around the globe.”
But according to Nielsen ratings Trump’s inauguration ceremony drew 31 million viewers. The number is 7 million less than the number of people who watched President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration, and almost 11 million less viewers than the 41.8 million record set by President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
But as Dennis Michael Lynch pointed out on Sunday morning, it is impossible to gage who drew more eyeballs considering live streaming on the internet has become so popular. According to DML, the many millions of people who watched Trump on a smart phone or computer is probably enough to place Trump ahead of Obama overall.
