Dating site offers service for Planned Parenthood supporters

OkCupid (OkC) is a popular dating site. According to Newsbusters, the site added a new filter that allows users to refine potential matches to find one that agrees with their stance on support for Planned Parenthood (PP). The news site claims OkC explains that a “shared cause is sexy.”

Those who do not support PP might disagree: Support for abortion, viewed by many as the murder of a baby, is decidedly un-sexy.

Newsbusters reports:

On Monday, dating site and app OkCupid (OkC) advertised a ‘new profile badge’ to help users ‘filter for Planned Parenthood supporters’ for a month.

“’Connect over a shared cause!’ one ad read on the website Sep. 11. ‘With the new Planned Parenthood badge, you can show your support and find other supporters who care about the same things you do.'”

Cited is an article posted to Medium by OkC, in which the dating site revealed a partnership with Planned Parenthood to help daters find each other. Users would have a badge placed on their profile when asked to declare support of government funding of the abortion giant:

“The badge will read ‘#IStandWithPP’ and will be prominently displayed on the profile of every OkCupid member who has publicly responded ‘no’ to the question ‘Should the government defund Planned Parenthood?’ And that’s a lot of people; over 80% of respondents have said ‘no’ so far, and the question is garnering hundreds of new responses every day.

“While more than one million install the OkC app per week, it’s anyone’s guess as to how many users answer that particular question.”

The Medium article is no longer an active link, and after creating a profile on the site, DML News could not find a way to wear the designation of support for PP. Filtering for support of PP showed no results, but filtering for abortion support did yield several potential dating matches.

Anti-Trump comedienne Chelsea Handler expressed approval of filtering for PP support when she was asked. According to Newsbusters, Handler said of OkC and Planned Parenthood teaming up: “This partnership was a no brainer for me. Personally, I would never date anyone who didn’t support Planned Parenthood, so I loved the idea that OkCupid is doing their part by giving people a place to connect on topics that matter.”

To make better matches, OkC adjusted its algorithm. By offering the badge, OkC felt that potential matches would be more inclined to look at a user’s profile.

“Responses to our iconic questions, like the one on Planned Parenthood, have always worked to inform our high-tech algorithm,” the OkC reportedly wrote on Medium. “But throughout this partnership, the Planned Parenthood Badge will make it even easier for supporters to start a conversation: not only will the badge highlight their support, but our algorithm will also recognize the badge and use it to promote like-minded daters to one another.”

Newsbusters suggested OkC could provide a pro-life filter, such as #IStandWithBabies. Searching for “prolife” matches at this time yielded no results in our tests.

When typing in “abortion,” we saw two popular filter options: “For you, personally, is abortion an option for accidental pregnancy?” and, “Should abortion be legal?”
