As we reported earlier, Jay Sekulow made the Sunday morning TV rounds that a lawyer makes when defending a politician. Jay appeared on Fox News and Meet The Press on Sunday in an attempt to defuse the damaging tweets launched by President Trump earlier in the week.
Sekulow lost his cool with Chris Wallace on Sunday morning because Wallace pointed out the president’s own words. Despite Sekulow’s claims that Trump is not under investigation, the president himself said he was under investigation in a tweet days earlier.
As a journalist, Wallace is 100% correct in his line of questioning. At the same time, I feel 100% bad for Sekulow because like all Trump supporters, he is fighting an uphill battle.
No matter who tells the president to stop tweeting, be it his wife, his lawyers, his supporters or his staff, Trump does what Trump wants to do. Simply put, the president does not listen to the people who urge him to “STOP!”
I get the emails all the time from viewers and readers who tell me to “lay off the president” when it comes to his tweets. Well, that’s like telling me to lay off the term “make America great again.” With each passing day, the president makes his job harder than it needs to be because of the tone and words within his tweets.
Why does he do it? Why does he tweet the nonsense? I have come to the conclusion it can be only one thing. The answer is as simple and it is disappointing. His ego.
As seen in the video below from 2014, I told a group of Republicans that Trump would be a great president if he didn’t love himself so much. Watch the first 60-seconds of the video and try not to agree with everything I said.
Bottom line is this: If the president can find a way to love America more than he loves himself, he will be the greatest president of our generation. He has to switch his ego into something that works for him, versus something that works against him.
But we are nearly six months into his term and it is becoming clearer by the day that he just cannot, and will not stop himself from tweeting the nonsense. Even Newt Gingrich, one of Trump’s biggest supporters agrees. Today, he told ABC NEWS that Trump is hurting himself with the tweets.
The Left is playing into his weakness. They are tugging at his ego knowing he will feel the need to scream at his detractors. I have said it a million times, “I think he should ignore these people.” The best way to silence them is with results. But his results get shadowed over by the tweets about fake news, Hillary, polls, and Russia.
The pattern is there on his Twitter timeline. He finds discipline for a day or two, but then he starts all over again. The bad tweets are nonstop and unpredictable, not to mention they are so poorly written. And as pointed out in the ABC NEWS video below, the president is making the case against himself.
Furthermore, with every damaging tweet, he pushes away Republican lawmakers who need to space themselves far enough away from the White House to ensure they don’t lose their next election. This results in a stagnant government where little gets done unless it’s via executive order.
The best example of how a tweet can hurt him is the one he launched a few days ago. It’s the same tweet Jay Sekulow is on TV trying to defuse. Trump tweeted that he was indeed being investigated: “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt.” Let me tell you what that is. That is Trump listening to Fox News and repeating what he heard without consulting with his legal team. Bottom line, case closed.
Sekulow is trying to clean up for the president, but he’s shoveling sand into the tide. Until Trump shows some big boy discipline, we all fall victim to his tweets and his ego! I thought it would be different, but I fear I will be wrong. How I hope I am wrong.
