LONDON — A female zookeeper was killed by a tiger at Hamerton Zoo Park on Monday. Police say the tiger attacked the woman while she was in the tiger’s exhibit.
Police were called to the zoo on Monday morning after receiving reports of the violent attack. “Sadly the female zookeeper died at the scene,” Cambridgeshire Police said in a statement.
Hamerton Zoo Park also issued a statement, saying, “Our thoughts and sympathies are with our colleagues, friends and families at this dreadful time.”
The statement called the incident a “freak accident” and states that staff members are too “distressed” to speak to the media. Visitors were evacuated in a calm and collected manner after the attack, according to eyewitnesses. Reportedly, the tiger remained in the enclosure throughout the event. No further information has been released about the tiger.
The zoo will be closed on Tuesday while authorities continue to investigate. Police say foul play is not suspected in the death.
