According to California Governor Jerry Brown (D), the Democratic Party needs to be more inclusive if they want to regain control of the House in 2018, as the Democratic base is “shifting.”
During an appearance Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Brown, said Democrats need to be open to pro-life candidates, as well, as he rejected the idea of “ideological purity.”
“I’d say, look, even on the abortion issue, it wasn’t very long ago that a number of Catholic Democrats were opposed to abortion,” Brown said. “So, the fact that somebody believes today what most people believed 50 years ago should not be the basis for their exclusion.”
Brown’s comments seem to be in support of the Democrat Party congressional campaign committee chairman, Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), who made a statement that “there is not a litmus test for Democratic candidates” on abortion rights, and that candidates across the country need to “fit the district,” and should support policies that can get them elected.
Calling on Democrats to embrace diversity, Brown tried logic during his Sunday interview.
“In America, we’re not ideological, we’re not like a Marxist party in 1910,” Brown said. “We are a big tent, by the very definition.
Brown’s support of Luján comes amid backlash from the Party. Despite Democrats being so inclusive, Luján’s statement was widely condemned by supporters of the abortion industry. From politics to entertainment, pro-choice advocates from many industries felt compelled to weigh in.

Luján’s statement stands in contrast Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman Tom Perez’s feelings. In April, Perez announced that pro-life candidates aren’t welcome in his Party.
Luján has received support from other Democrats, however. Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) said Democrats “can’t afford to have a litmus test” and called such a measurement “a purity test.”
“My focus is going to be supporting all of my colleagues and doing everything we can to, at least, maintain our numbers as it relates to 2018 election,” Harris said.
Governor Jerry Brown said the Democratic Party needs to start focusing on the “big picture” as they attempt to win back both chambers of Congress in 2018. He said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi isn’t what’s wrong with the Party, it’s putting the right candidates up for election.
“If you added up pluses and minuses, I think Nancy Pelosi is a major pillar of the Democratic Party,” Brown said. “And the answer is not to try to replace her with somebody, but to make sure the candidates represent and can empathize and be a part of the district they’re running in.”
“If we want to be a governing party of a very diverse, and I say diverse ideologically as well as ethnically, country, well, then you have to have a party that rises above the more particular issues to the generic, the general issue of making America great, if I might take that word,” Brown added.
