Democratic donor rallies support for Trump’s impeachment

All 50 governors and 2,000 city mayors around the country were urged to publicly declare their stance regarding the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump. In a letter sent Wednesday, billionaire Democratic megadonor Tom Steyer said the elected officials are duty bound to make their stances known, and to urge federal lawmakers to support impeachment.

In his letter, Steyer, an environmental activist, accused the president of “violat[ing] the Constitution, the office of the Presidency, and the trust of the public.”

According to Steyer, if the Democrats take back the House and the Senate in 2018, impeachment “becomes a very real issue.”

“That makes it imperative for every Governor of every state, and every mayor of every city, to acknowledge where they stand,” Steyer wrote. “I am asking you today to make public your position on the impeachment of Donald Trump, and to urge your federal representatives to remove him from office at once.”

Critical of efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare, Steyer says President Trump is “actively sabotaging” the program, according to The Hill.

Within the letter, Steyer lists the following disapprovals of the president:

  • the fact that he’s received criticism from within the Republican Party
  • the fact that he’s received criticism from his own Cabinet
  • his decision to pull out of the Paris climate change agreement

“Your constituents deserve to know they are represented by people in every level of government who have the patriotism and political courage to stand up and take action when it is so desperately needed.”

Steyer penned a similar letter last week, telling Democrats in congressional offices and on campaign committees that they must support removing the president from office and move to do so if the Party regains control of Congress in next years’ election.

In order to win the House, Democrats would need to gain 24 seats, and would have to work hard to gain the Senate, too.
