In a House Democrats forum, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) said that the Trump administration’s cap of 50,000 refugees is “nothing in this world,” and that the narrative that immigrants are generally criminals needs to be taken back because it makes it difficult to be compassionate.
Jayapal said she believes the United States should “increase those numbers.”
President Donald Trump reduced the cap from 110,000 to 50,000 in 2017. However, Jayapal made it clear that she wants to increase the number.
“We really have a duty to the world — and to our history as a country — to really make sure that we continue to increase and not decrease those numbers,” she said.
