Democrats’ biggest loser of 2017 thinks he can help the party win in 2018

After being soundly defeated in a special election for the House seat in Georgia, Democrat Jon Ossoff has reemerged in the news. Ossoff will be included on a panel organized by Netroots Nation on Saturday to discuss how Democrats can win in 2018.

Ossoff will not be drawing on recent personal experience, presumably. He was defeated by a margin of approximately 4 points by GOP candidate Karen Handel, the two vying for Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District seat in a special election. After raising a staggering amount of money – nearly $30 million – and receiving support from liberal Hollywood, Handel won with 53 percent of the vote, to Ossoff’s 47 percent.

Now, as Democrats gear up to battle Republicans in the 2018 midterms, Ossoff will be part of a panel discussion that seeks to address: “Where, and how, should progressive activists focus their energy for maximum impact?” provides more details on the event:

Session Type(s): Panel

Starts: Saturday, Aug. 12 9:00 AM

Ends: Saturday, Aug. 12 10:15 AM

Room: Regency V

Democrats have suffered severe losses in recent midterm elections. Because of redistricting, the 2010 elections devastated the party so badly that we have not yet been able to recover. And 2014 wasn’t much better. But the party in control of the White House usually loses ground in the midterms—and because of Trump, progressives are more mobilized than they have been in a decade. Just in time, too: not only is control of the House at stake, but the next round of redistricting is just around the corner. For 2018, where, and how, should progressive activists focus their energy for maximum impact? Our panel— comprised of a handicapper, a staffer, an activist, and a candidate—will approach these questions from each angle.

Obviously falling back on the old “redistricting” excuse, wants to retake the House in 2018 and is looking to Ossoff to help them understand defeat.
