Democrats threatening government shutdown

The Democrats do not have any control over the appropriations process for the first time in a decade, but that doesn’t stop them from threatening to shut down the government over the appropriation of funding for President Trump’s border wall.

The Washington Times reported on Monday that Democrats will be “counting on the GOP’s shutdown showdown fights of the last few years to scare Republicans into being timid about which fights they choose to pick.”

Minority Leader Charles Schumer penned a letter representative of all top Democrats, which targets Republicans and states that bills must be passed which will continue to allow Planned Parenthood to collect taxpayer money. The report noted that, although Democrats would have to filibuster to block the bills, “they insisted it’s Republicans who will be blamed for a government shutdown.”

“If Republicans insist on inserting poison pill riders such as defunding Planned Parenthood, building a border wall, or starting a deportation force, they will be shutting down the government and delivering a severe blow to our economy,” claimed the Democrats.

“The government is currently funded through Apr. 28 under a bill that continues 2016 levels,” stated the report, adding that basic non-essential government operations will have to cease after that date unless more money is appropriated.
