Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) said claims that Jared Kushner tried to set up a back-channel with Russia are disturbing,  and therefore the House Oversight Committee member has asked the committee to subpoena any documents related to Kushner’s meetings with Russian officials. He also wants the White House to suspend Kushner’s security clearance.

Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, has recently been accused of trying to establish a secret, secure channel for communications between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin, according to a report listing “anonymous officials” as it’s source.

According to Krishnamoorthi, the issue is not simply that Mr. Kushner wanted a communication backchannel; it’s that Mr. Kushner sought to pursue one with Russia shortly after American intelligence agencies had collectively acknowledged the Kremlin’s cyber warfare against the United States.

Krishnamoorthi  has called on Kushner to testify before the House Oversight Committee.

The Democratic National Committee has also asked for Kushner’s security clearance to be suspended, as well as for him to be fired from his position in the White House. They asked for the extreme measures after reports were released about Kushner’s status as a person of interest in an FBI probe.

Kushner is of interest to the FBI because he may have information that is relevant to their investigation into allegations of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 U.S. election. Kushner is the subject of the investigation as a person whose conduct is within the scope of the grand jury’s investigation.  The FBI’s interest in Kushner doesn’t mean he is suspected of doing anything illegal,  or that he’s subject to criminal charges.
