Nebraska Democrat Party chairwoman Jane Kleeb went on the record recently to publicly announce that her party is giving all new refugees in Nebraska a special welcome letter, along with a voter registration form.
Kleeb posted a Facebook Live video on Saturday, March 18, announcing that the Nebraska Democratic Party was hosting their “Spring Meeting,” which included various committee meetings and issue caucuses, such as Native American, Latino, African American and LGBTQ groups.
Kleeb also touted the refugee program in Nebraska. “Nebraska has, and welcomes the most refugees and immigrants on a per-capita basis,” she said, adding, “When President Trump put in his racist travel ban, we put out a call to action to Democrats across the state saying ‘help us create welcome baskets for refugee and immigrant families who are making Nebraska their home.”
She proudly explained that the welcome baskets are given to each refugee family, containing basic necessities to help them get started – including a welcome letter from the Nebraska Democratic Party, signed by herself, a sticker they can put on their car, and a voter registration form.
Reportedly, Nebraska settled 1,441 refugees between October 2015 and September 2016. Newly arriving refugees are not legally eligible to register to vote, and are only allowed to become a naturalized citizen and obtain a permanent residence green card after they have been in the United States a minimum of five years.
The Conservative Review reported that they contacted Kleeb about the matter, who said she was just giving out the voter registration forms “so they could get familiar with the forms.”
Kleeb also stated that many of the refugees were political leaders in their own countries, and the Nebraska Democratic Party is reaching out to embrace and welcome them.
