Running as an anti-establishment progressive, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) has already garnered support from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the United Auto Workers labor union, and Teamsters labor union in his bid for the role of Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman.
Now, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has asked its members who can vote for the DNC chair to choose Ellison, according to a new Politico report.
“I welcome the SEIU’s support, and, as DNC Chair, I will always stand with [the] SEIU and the working people of America,” responded Ellison in a statement.

Ellison is the first Muslim elected to Congress and has former ties to Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam.
Rival Tom Perez, the former Labor Secretary, has also been endorsed by several unions, including the United Farm Workers and the Commercial Workers International Union.
Both contenders have big-league supporters: Bernie Sanders has endorsed Ellison, and Joe Biden is on the side of Perez. The election will take place next week.
